Protocol for Brucella Canis

Brucella canis is a bacterium that causes brucellosis, primarily affecting dogs but 

also capable of infecting humans. The risk is low but not zero.

It is particularly prevalent in certain countries and as such, Vets in the UK have had to look at ways we can manage increasing cases and limit the risk of infection.

Dogs can carry the disease without showing any symptoms and the tests carried out prior to travel are not sufficient to guarantee there is no chance of infection.

Brucella infection can also take up to 3 months to show in blood tests.

There is a specific test which is carried out by a government lab which will tell us, and you, whether your dog is carrying any brucella infection.

Unless your dog has had that test, the treatment we are able to provide will be limited to routine vaccinations. We may not be able to;

1. perform any surgery or offer diagnostics

2. refer your dog for specialist treatment as referral centres may not accept them

3. send your dog to an out of hours service

We are therefore recommending that all dogs who have travelled from another country (except France and Ireland) are tested. Once a negative test result is received, this will go on to the dog’s records and you will receive a copy of the results. No further action is then required.

This means that should your dog require any surgery or treatment, we can proceed as normal with no delays.

In the unlikely event of a positive result, your dog will still receive the treatment it needs but we will be able to manage any condition whilst ensuring our safety.
