Skin Allergies in Dogs and Cats
An Introduction to Causes, Symptoms, and Management
Skin allergies are a common concern among dogs and cats, often leading to discomfort and distress for our pets. These allergies are often seasonal and can be triggered by a variety of factors, including environmental allergens such as pollen, dust mites, and mould, as well as food ingredients and flea bites.
Typical symptoms include excessive scratching, licking or biting at the skin, redness, hair loss, and the appearance of sores or rashes. In some cases, you may notice your pet shaking their head or rubbing their face against furniture due to irritation around the ears or muzzle.
Managing skin allergies involves identifying and avoiding the trigger where possible, using prescribed medications or topical treatments, and maintaining regular flea prevention. For food allergies, an elimination diet may be necessary to pinpoint the offending ingredient. If you think your pet is suffering from irritation then book an appointment to come and see us.
