We feel strongly that all animals are entitled to receive veterinary care and we will always aim to provide a quality service to all our patients. However, there is a much higher infection risk with animals imported from abroad specifically with regard to a disease called Brucella. To protect our staff and other patients, we have implemented a new protocol in line with good standard practice throughout the veterinary industry.
When a dog has been imported from a listed country, (see list below), we will require them to have a blood test for Brucella once the dog has been in the UK for at least 3 months. This still applies even if the animal has been tested in their country of origin previously.
Until we have a negative result, we will only be able to provide basic health checks and emergency procedures. We will be unable to book in any appointments until the testing process is complete.
Once a negative test result is obtained, we can then book them in for any procedures. I.e. Neutering, mass removals, dentals etc.
Staff will be wearing full PPE to examine and take blood samples.
If a positive result is obtained, we would require the dog to come back in for another blood test to be sent to the APHA government lab to confirm the diagnosis.
Brucella is a notifiable disease.
